Inside an automatic transmission, gear changes are made by clutches and brakes moved by fluid pressure. A Volkswagen self-study programme for the 09P transmission describes the arrangement: the clutches and brakes of the transmission are actuated by means of hydraulic valves, called shift valves, inside the valve body. Those shift valves are controlled by electrically operated solenoid valves, which in turn are controlled by the Transmission Control Module.
