Definition
Payload is the combined weight of occupants and cargo carried by the vehicle. Towing capacity is the highest loaded trailer weight the vehicle is rated to tow. A trailer also adds tongue weight to the vehicle’s payload, so the two limits must be checked together rather than treated as separate allowances.

What it changes
A model’s advertised maximum may not apply to one exact vehicle. Engine, axle ratio, drivetrain, equipment and the certification label determine the usable limits for that configuration.
