2016 Toyota RAV4 Problems, recalls and specs
The refreshed year of the XA40 RAV4 and the first year of a hybrid version in the United States. The petrol car keeps a single engine, a 2.5-litre four rated 176 hp at 6,000 rpm and 172 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm, with a six-speed automatic and a choice of front-wheel drive or Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel drive. The largest recall on this model year was filed seven years later and is about a part a previous owner may have fitted: 23V-734 covers replacement 12-volt batteries that can move in the tray.
Facelift year
What changed for 2016
- The range was restyled, with a new front fascia, available LED lighting and restyled bumpers.
- A sport-tuned SE grade joined the line-up, with paddle shifters.
- Toyota Safety Sense became available, adding automated pre-collision braking.
- A hybrid arrived for the first time in the US RAV4, with a combined 194 system horsepower and an electrically driven rear axle Toyota calls AWD-i.
Before you hand over money
Check before you buy
- Check the title status first - clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon buyback. It is the single most consequential thing on a US used car.
- Open the bonnet and look at the battery before anything else. Recall 23V-734 covers 1,853,568 RAV4s from 2013 to 2018 because a replacement 12-volt battery may not fit the tray properly, and a battery that moves can touch the hold-down bracket. This is a fault a previous owner creates, so the car in front of you either has it or does not.
- Look up open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov. Three campaigns are on file for this model year, including a skid-control unit recall limited to cars built between October 2015 and February 2016; dealers close open recalls free.
- Establish whether it is the hybrid. The hybrid uses the 2AR-FXE engine and an electrically driven rear axle, and neither its output nor its economy is the figure shown here.

Complaints and recalls
Where the complaints land · top 6
A complaint count is not a failure rate. It tracks how many of these were sold and how much attention a problem drew, so a popular car will always show more complaints than a rare one. Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation, retrieved 2026-08-13.

Known problems
Charging system: battery and alternator
The alternator charges the battery while the engine runs and powers everything electrical. Both are consumable parts with a service life, and on a used car at least one of them has usually been replaced already — or is due.
Air conditioning compressor failure
The compressor is the pump in the air conditioning loop. When it seizes it can send metal debris through the whole system, which turns a component replacement into a system job.
Suspension and steering noise
Bushings, ball joints, link rods and strut mounts are rubber and grease components that wear continuously. They rarely fail suddenly; they get gradually noisier and vaguer, which is why a test drive on a rough road tells you more than one on smooth pavement.
A replacement battery that can move and short out
The original battery fits. A replacement one may not — and if it moves in the tray it can touch the hold-down bracket and short. Toyota recalled 1,853,568 cars for it. This is a used-car problem by construction: it can only exist on a car whose battery has been changed, which after ten years is most of them.

Common — parts and independent shops are easy to findA high-volume crossover through this period and mechanically shared with other Toyotas of the era, so parts are stocked widely and independent shops know the car.

Relative bands only. What a job costs depends on your region, the shop and where the parts come from, so a dollar figure written here would be wrong for most readers — and a wrong number costs more trust than a missing one.
