Symptoms
Nothing while driving. The risk is when the heater is plugged in, typically overnight in cold weather, and the vehicle is unattended. Ford's wording across the campaigns is consistent: corrosion or a damaged cable "could cause a resistive short, increasing the risk of overheated or melted wiring, increasing the risk of a fire."
Likely cause
Different in each of the three campaigns, which is why they are three campaigns. **18V-894**: prolonged corrosion in the cable when the heater is plugged in. **19V-278**: the splice connector was damaged during the 18V-894 repair itself. **20V-098**: block heaters that had been "potentially relocated from their originally installed location", leaving a damaged cable behind.
How should it be checked?
First establish whether the truck even has a block heater — it is an option, not standard, and a truck without one is outside all of this. If it has one, run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and then ask a specific follow-up question, because the remedy came in two stages. Ford's initial action was to **disable the cable** and only replace it later once parts existed. A truck recorded as remedied in 2019 may have had the cable switched off and never gone back for the replacement — the heater does not work and the owner may never have noticed, because most people plug one in only a few weeks a year.
How can you check it yourself?
Look for the block heater cord, usually coiled behind the grille or near the front bumper. Check the plug end for green corrosion, cracking or melting, and check whether the cable looks factory-routed or has been rerouted. A cable that has been cut, capped or taped off is the sign of the disable-only remedy.
The question to ask the shop
Does this truck have a factory engine block heater? Have recalls 18V-894, 19V-278 and 20V-098 been completed on this VIN — and for each, was the cable **replaced** or only **disabled**? Does the heater still work?
