Symptoms
Nothing detectable, like every inflator defect. The failure only appears at deployment: NHTSA's finding is that the inflators "are at risk of rupturing when the vehicle's air bag is commanded to deploy, causing metal debris to be forcefully ejected into the occupant compartment."
Likely cause
A manufacturing artefact rather than a chemical one, and this is what separates it from Takata. NHTSA's account: "friction welding produces a byproduct called 'weld flash' or 'weld slag' that accumulates along the weld seam", and "if the exit orifice is blocked during deployment such that the gas cannot escape, the inflator will likely over-pressurize and rupture." Because it is a build defect rather than degradation over time, it does not get worse with age and it has no climate zones. The population is bounded instead by a process change: ARC introduced a borescope inspection in 2018, and the subject inflators are the ones built before that.
How should it be checked?
Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, which will catch the roughly one million units that have actually been recalled — most of them GM's 23V-334. Then understand what a clean result means here, because it is not what it means elsewhere on this site. The lookup shows recalls that exist. If a car contains one of the other fifty million inflators, no recall exists to display, and there is no public way to map a VIN to its inflator supplier. Asking the manufacturer directly is the only route, and there is no obligation to answer. This file does not tell you to avoid any car. It tells you that a specific reassurance you might expect to be available is not.
How can you check it yourself?
There is nothing to check on the car and no honest way to pretend otherwise. The VIN lookup is the only tool, and on this issue it answers a narrower question than it appears to.
The question to ask the shop
Is this vehicle covered by recall 23V-334 or any other airbag inflator campaign? Have any airbag modules been replaced, and if so when and why? — and if you want to push further, the manufacturer's customer service line is the only place that could say who built the inflator, and it may decline.
