Deposits that accumulate on the back of the intake valves, most associated with direct-injection engines.

Definition

SAE research states that gasoline direct-injection engines have a well-known propensity to form intake valve deposits, regardless of operator service, engine architecture, or cylinder configuration. The paper attributes this to the lack of the fuel-washing process typical of port-injected engines. The deposits build gradually on the valve's intake side, where fuel spray no longer reaches.

Not the same as

Combustion-chamber deposits form in any engine from burning fuel; these sit on the valve's intake side, which direct injection no longer washes.
