Symptoms

Ford describes it as "a change in brake pedal travel and feel, increased pedal effort and reduced front brake function, possibly requiring greater effort and distance to stop the vehicle". A pedal that sinks slowly under steady pressure, or that needs more push than it used to, is the shape of it. The front brakes do most of the stopping, so losing part of that function is not a subtle change.

Likely cause

Stated plainly in the campaign: "the brake master cylinder may leak brake fluid into the brake booster". The leak path matters — fluid going into the booster rather than onto the ground means the level drops without a puddle under the truck, so the usual visual clue is absent.

How should it be checked?

Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The recall began 28 October 2020 and has no expiry, so an outstanding one is still repaired free — Ford replaces the master cylinder and inspects the booster, replacing that too if needed. If the check comes back complete, ask whether the booster was replaced as well or only inspected.

How can you check it yourself?

With the engine running, press the pedal firmly and hold it — it should stay put rather than creeping slowly toward the floor. Then check the brake fluid level against the marks on the reservoir. A low level with no visible leak underneath is the combination that fits this.

Has recall 20V-332 been completed on this VIN, and was the brake booster replaced or only inspected? Has the brake fluid ever needed topping up between services?
