Symptoms
The federal court summarised the plaintiffs' accounts as "a loud 'clunking' or banging noise when the engine starts; a 'clanking' noise from the Transmission; jerky and rough acceleration and deceleration; delayed engagement of the Transmission and gears holding too long then roughly slamming into gear", together with slipping. A truck can show one of these and none of the others.
Likely cause
Not established in anything citable. The complaint alleges a design defect; Ford says the shifting is normal operation; the court that let the claims proceed was ruling on whether they may be heard, not on why the transmission behaves this way. Several explanations circulate and none of them appear in a document worth citing, so none are repeated here.
How should it be checked?
Start with the software, not the hardware. Ford addressed part of the reported behaviour through transmission control recalibration, so the first question is whether a truck is at the current calibration level — a shop can read that. Behaviour that persists at the latest level is a different conversation from behaviour that was never reflashed.
How can you check it yourself?
Drive it from cold, in traffic rather than on a motorway — the reports cluster at low speed and light throttle, and a warmed-up truck on an open road can hide all of it. Listen at start-up. Then let it downshift on its own approaching a junction rather than braking hard.
The question to ask the shop
Is the transmission control software at the current calibration level, and is there a dealer record of when it was last updated? If the shifting was complained about before, what was done — a reflash, a valve body, or was it recorded as operating as designed?
