Ford F-150

Strengths and checks

What it does well
  • Aluminium body
  • Four engine choices
  • Deep parts supply
Check before you buy
  • Check the title status first — clean, salvage, rebuilt or flood. On a truck this age a rebuilt title is common enough to be worth confirming before anything mechanical.
  • Work out from the VIN whether a 3.5L truck has the naturally aspirated Ti-VCT V6 or the twin-turbo EcoBoost. Both are 3.5 litres, and they are not the same engine to own or to repair.
  • Every 2016 engine uses the six-speed. A 2016 truck advertised with a ten-speed is either mis-described or is not a 2016.
  • Look for open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov. This model year carries 14 recall campaigns, and dealers fix open ones free.

Check before you buy
  • Check the title status first — clean, salvage, rebuilt or flood. On a truck this age a rebuilt title is common enough to be worth confirming before anything mechanical.
  • Identifying the engine matters more on a 2017 than on any other year of this generation: it decides whether the truck has the six-speed or the ten-speed, and two of the four engines displace 3.5 litres.
  • On a 3.5L EcoBoost, confirm the transmission is the ten-speed rather than taking the listing's word for it. A 2017 listing that says ten-speed with any other engine does not match how Ford built the truck.
  • Look for open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov. This model year carries 18 recall campaigns, and dealers fix open ones free.

Figures come from the vehicle files and from NHTSA’s public records. Complaint counts scale with how many were sold, so they compare volume of reports rather than reliability. Confirm the model year, trim and inspection result on the specific car before you decide.
